CARNIC CROSSING – 2
HIGH-ALTITUDE TREKKING between Italy and Austria

The Carnic Crossing, also known as the “Peace Trail,” is a high-altitude route above 2,000 meters that follows the mountain ridge of the Carnic Alps, straddling the border between Italy and Austria. This spectacular trail offers breathtaking 360-degree views of rugged rocky peaks, vast valleys, picturesque alpine lakes, and lush forests of fir and larch.

The entire route stretches approximately 180 km, starting from San Candido to Coccau on the Italian side. Beyond immersing yourself in nature and breathtaking landscapes, this trek is also a historical journey. During World War I (1915-18), this border area was fiercely contested between the two armies, and today, hikers can still visit trenches, fortifications, military posts, and caves carved into the rock.

The Carnic Crossing is suitable for all trekking enthusiasts. Our itinerary follows the less demanding section of the route, designed for experienced and well-trained hikers accustomed to walking on mountain trails for several consecutive days. A good level of fitness, sure footing, and the ability to tackle moderate elevation gains are required.

An adventure off the beaten path, ideal for the curious and well-trained hiker.
